The kids had just headed home after a week with us in Florida.
We were sitting on the couch inside. The pool was right there. The canal. Sunshine on the water. And we had our laptops open talking about money.
Not the way we used to talk about money.
For years our financial conversations had a shape we knew well. What is the magic number? When can we stop? We worked with our financial planner, ran the scenarios, looked at the projections until the answer stopped changing. At some point those conversations became foregone conclusions. We were fine. The number was there.
So when we opened the laptops that morning, we thought we were doing what we always do — recalibrate, plan, figure out what still needed doing and what had changed. And then somewhere in the middle of it we stumbled into a conversation we had never had before.
How do you actually start spending it?
I want to sit with that question for a moment before I explain it.
We did not start with money.
We started with college debt and a maxed-out credit card and a townhome with almost no furniture. We used throw pillows as a couch. We were not embarrassed about it. We were just starting.
After a few years we moved into our first real home with entire rooms that sat empty for years. Our son loved it. He tore through the empty spaces on his bike with training wheels, delighted by the absence of things. We watched him and laughed.
We were building something. We just couldn’t see it yet.
What followed was thirty years of watching a number go up. Slowly at first. Then steadily. A deposit here. A good year there. Discipline that became habit that became identity. We were the people who saved. Who planned. Who didn’t.
The number going up meant we were doing it right.
That was the wiring. Thirty years of it.
Then I retired. And the number, the one we had watched climb for thirty years, stopped climbing the way it used to. One income instead of two. The deposits still coming, but smaller. The arrow still pointing up, but hesitating.
And I felt it anyway. The unease of the shift. The sense that something had changed even before the drawdown began.
My husband is still working, through the end of this year. He jokes that he wanted me to retire first. His canary in the coalmine.
There is another layer I did not expect. My husband is still contributing. Still getting the paycheck that tells him every two weeks that he is valued and productive and doing something that matters. I lost that when I retired. The identity, yes — I knew that was coming. But the paycheck was also proof of something. And without it, even with everything we built together, even with a plan that accounts for exactly this, I sometimes feel like a guest at a table I helped set.
He tells me I am crazy.
He is probably right. But the feeling doesn’t care about probably.
So there we were. Couch. Laptops. Sunshine outside that we were not sitting in.
We already knew something had to change. We just didn’t have a name for it yet.
We came to it separately, compared notes. What we found wasn’t a number. It was a framework and a name.
A Personal Freedom Fund. A designated amount, per person, per year. No justification required. No conversation needed. Already allocated. Already yours.
And a principle: spend not to spend, but to increase the quality of your life. Find the places where life creates drag. The tasks you dread. The things that cost you more in energy than they cost in dollars. Spend there. Remove the friction.
We even gave ourselves a challenge. A mandate to spend a certain amount before the end of the year. Intentional spending. Spending as a goal, not a concession.
My husband looked at me and said it felt like Brewster’s Millions.
We looked at each other across the table. We had built a life by being careful. And now we needed a framework, and a name, just to give ourselves permission to enjoy it.
Here is the thing about watching a number go up for thirty years: you forget that it was always supposed to come back down.
The arrow pointing the other way is not a warning. It is the plan working.
We know this. We believe this. And still, some days, one of us hesitates.
And the other one says: that one’s coming out of your bucket.
We laugh every time. Because it took a week in Florida and a planning session that went sideways to get us to a joke. But the joke is the permission. And the permission, finally, is enough.
The going up was never the point. The going up was in service of something. The something is now.
Saving is easy to justify. Spending what you saved takes a different kind of courage.
